Living and Dying in Calhoun County
This was a national story that made it’s way from a town with a population in the hundreds, to television sets and newspapers in every city. Barbara Dawson, 57, died after being arrested and forcibly removed by police from Calhoun Liberty Hospital, where she had gone seeking treatment. Though the story is more complicated than that: maintaining a treatment facility in a rural town where doctors are nearly impossible to retain, and patients often use the emergency room as their primary care facility, sets a difficult precedent to keep afloat.
